Redland City is home to one of the most significant urban koala populations because there is nowhere else in Australia where these marsupials live so close to a major city. We love our koalas and we are proud to have this iconic animal living in our urban backyards. Unfortunately koala numbers are going down, with less than 3,000 now in the Redlands.
Council’s conservation efforts include raising awareness for koalas. We encourage ongoing work by wildlife officers and researchers to study how we can ensure their survival.
Redlands residents also need to find the best way to co-exist with these solitary creatures. By being proactive in our daily lives, we hope that our small urban koala population continues to live and thrive here.
Dare we imagine a time when Redland koalas will actually start to multiply instead of decreasing from year to year?
That is our challenge and at Koala Central we hope to get a shared virtual space where people from all over the world, who love this beautiful animal, will be able to exchange ideas and information about all things koalas.
